Murder Before Evensong represents Channel 5's newest dramatic offering.

The gripping thriller draws inspiration from the inaugural novel in the Canon Clement Mysteries collection, penned by the Reverend Richard Coles.

Harry Potter alumnus Matthew Lewis takes on the role of Canon Daniel Clement, a parish priest who finds himself thrust into uncharted waters when a corpse turns up within his church grounds, coinciding with the unwelcome arrival of his domineering mother Audrey, portrayed by New Tricks veteran Amanda Redman.

The official synopsis for Murder Before Evensong, which unfolds against the backdrop of 1980s England, states: "Canon Daniel Clement shares Champton rectory with his widowed mother - opinionated, fearless, ever-so-slightly annoying Audrey - and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda.

"When Daniel announces a plan to install a lavatory in the church, the parish is suddenly (and unexpectedly) divided: as lines are drawn, long-buried secrets come dangerously close to destroying the apparent calm of the village. And then a body is found dead at the back of the church, stabbed in the neck with a pair of secateurs.

"As the police move in and the bodies start piling up, Daniel is the only one who can try and keep his fractured community together... and catch a killer."
