Renowned Pakistani actress Sarwat Gilani recently shared insights into her personal and professional journey in a candid interview with Maliha Rehman. The actress, who is making a comeback to television with the drama Biryaniopened up about battling postpartum depression following the birth of her third child and how returning to work helped her mental health.

Sarwat Gilani revealed that she did not experience postpartum depression after the birth of her first two children but faced it with her third. “Keeping myself busy was the key,” she said, adding that her husband encouraged her to return to acting as she had been completely absorbed in parenting.

Speaking about the differences between working in web series and traditional dramas, Sarwat Gilani pointed out that web productions move at a much faster pace. “In dramas, if there’s an emotional scene, I might get 15 seconds to perform. In web series, I have to deliver the same emotions in just 4 to 5 seconds,” she explained. She added that working in web series helped her rediscover and sharpen her acting skills.

Addressing the portrayal of women smoking in web series, Sarwat Gilani clarified a common misconception. She emphasized that such scenes should not be seen as a symbol of women’s empowerment or freedom. “Showing a woman smoking on screen isn’t promoting freedom; it’s simply portraying a character and reflecting a part of our society,” she said. “Some women in real life smoke, and web series often mirror such realities. It’s not about glamorizing it or labeling it as liberation.”

She further advised women to engage in multiple activities and learn diverse skills to keep themselves mentally strong, especially during emotionally challenging times.
