Today, on Sunday, October 19, Chhoti Diwali is being celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion across the country. This day is not only the second day of Deepotsav, but also the three sacred conjunctions of Kali Chaudas, Hanuman Puja and Monthly Shivratri are taking place on this day. Such a coincidence is rarely seen, hence the religious importance of this Chhoti Diwali has increased even more.

According to the Panchang, Chaturdashi Tithi of Kartik Krishna Paksha will start from 1:51 pm on October 19 and will continue till 3:44 pm on October 20. The festival of Chhoti Diwali is celebrated on this date. It is also called Narak Chaturdashi or Roop Chaudas, which symbolizes the eradication of evils, negativity and darkness.

Special significance of Kali Chaudas

The tradition of celebrating Kali Chaudas on the day of Chhoti Diwali is very ancient. According to Garuda Purana, there is a tradition of donating a lamp for Yamraj on this day. Kali Chaudas is celebrated with great pomp in Gujarat and Western India. This festival is celebrated when Chaturdashi Tithi is present at midnight (Maha Nishita period). Mother Kali and Veer Vetal are especially worshiped on this day. Many devotees go to the cremation grounds and worship the Goddess, because this day is associated with the destruction of negative powers and gaining self-confidence. Keep in mind that Kali Chaudas, Narak Chaturdashi and Roop Chaudas are three different beliefs.

Auspicious coincidence of Hanuman Puja

Worshiping Lord Hanuman on the day of Chhoti Diwali also has special significance. It is believed that by worshiping Lord Hanuman on this day, a person gets protection from evil spirits and gains strength and self-confidence. According to the legend, Lord Shri Ram had given a boon to Hanuman ji that ‘wherever I am worshipped, you will be worshiped there first.’ For this reason, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Hanuman a day before Diwali. Devotees recite Hanuman Chalisa on this day. Sindoor, jasmine oil, red flowers, laddus or jaggery-gram are offered to Hanumanji. By doing this morale increases and one gets freedom from every obstacle in life.

Importance of monthly Shivratri

Today is also the holy day of monthly Shivratri. This fast is observed on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of every month. This day is considered a symbol of the divine union of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. According to the Puranas, on this day Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Linga and was worshiped by Lord Vishnu and Brahmaji. By observing fast on this day and anointing Shivalinga with water, milk, curd, honey and Ganga water, even the most difficult tasks are accomplished and happiness and peace remains in marital life.
