Bollywood’s legendary actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, has passed away at the age of 84. He breathed his last in Mumbai on Monday after battling a prolonged illness.
Reports suggest that Asrani had been unwell for several days. Four days before his death, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu. Doctors later revealed that there was fluid accumulation in his lungs.
His personal assistant, Babubhai, confirmed the sad news. He said, “Asrani Sahab was admitted to the hospital four days ago. He passed away today, October 20, around 3:30 pm.”
The actor’s last rites were held at Santacruz Crematorium earlier in the day. His family chose to perform the funeral quietly, in accordance with Asrani’s wishes. Before his passing, he had told his wife, Manju Asrani, to keep the funeral simple and avoid any public attention.
Because of this, the family announced his death only after completing the final rites.
Asrani, who hailed from Jaipur, began his career in the 1960s and became one of the most recognized faces of Indian cinema. Over more than five decades, he appeared in over 350 films, earning fame for his comic brilliance and distinct acting style.
Apart from his successful acting career, Asrani also directed several films and worked with some of Bollywood’s biggest stars. He became a household name through roles in classics such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, and Amar Akbar Anthony.
