The festival of Govardhan (Govardhan 2025) celebrated on the next day of Diwali is a precious tradition of Indian culture. On this day people worship Govardhan Parvat made of cow dung, which is not just a religious ritual but a symbol of reverence for nature and Lord Krishna. It is believed that worshiping Govardhan brings happiness, prosperity and good fortune in the family. This festival brings a special occasion of enthusiasm and devotion for both children and adults.
In today’s time when modern lifestyle has affected our traditions, the tradition of making Govardhan from cow dung is still alive. It is not only a religious ritual but also shows a sense of respect for our earth and mother cow. People use flowers, rangoli and small idols to decorate it, which makes this festival even more grand and spectacular. Unity, faith and family values are also encouraged in the society through Govardhan Puja.
Why is Govardhan made from cow dung? (Govardhan Puja 2025)
According to the scriptures, this festival started when Lord Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain on his little finger to break the pride of Lord Indra. On this day, there is a tradition of worshiping cow, cow dung and mother earth because these are the basis of life. Cow dung is considered a “sacred element”, it removes negative energy and makes the environment pure. This is the reason that on this day, statues of Govardhan Mountain, Mother Cow, Shri Krishna and Brijvasis are made from cow dung.

Method of making Govardhan from cow dung
preparing cow dung
To make Govardhan from cow dung, first choose clean and fresh cow dung. Make sure that there is no dirt or garbage of any kind in it. If the cow dung is a little dry, add some water to it to make it smooth and moldable, so that it can be shaped easily. It is better to wear gloves on hands, this can avoid bad smell and dirt on hands. If you want, you can also add some soil to the cow dung. This makes it easier to shape mountains and figures.
What to make after this
After the cow dung is ready, clean the courtyard or open space first. The place should be absolutely clean so that Govardhan remains stable. First of all, make a big heap of cow dung and give it the shape of a hill. It is a symbol of Govardhan Mountain. While shaping it, keep in mind that the height and width are balanced, so that it looks like a real mountain.
Make small balls from cow dung and prepare shapes of cow, calf and tree. These figures are not only beautiful to look at, but also add spiritual significance at the time of worship. The statue of Lord Shri Krishna is kept in the middle of the hill. This is the central attraction of Govardhan Puja. Decorate around the idol with flowers, flower garlands, kheel and turmeric-kumkum. This makes Govardhan look even more grand and auspicious.
importance of decoration
Decorating with flowers and colorful materials not only enhances beauty but also spreads auspicious energy. Now decorate Govardhan with flower petals, basil leaves and rangoli. Light small lamps nearby and make the environment sacred by burning fragrant incense.
