The popular AI chatbot ChatGPT will soon disappear from WhatsApp. Meta has announced that, as part of its new policy, third-party AI bots will be completely banned on WhatsApp starting January 2026. This will directly impact users who use bots like ChatGPT or Perplexity AI on WhatsApp.
Changes to take effect January 15, 2026
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp and Instagram, has clarified that starting next year, no third-party apps will be allowed to run as AI assistants on WhatsApp. The new policy will take effect January 15, 2026, after which ChatGPT and other similar AI bots will be removed from the platform.
OpenAI informed
OpenAI has already warned its users about this change. The company stated that the ChatGPT bot will be discontinued on WhatsApp, but users will still have several alternatives to use ChatGPT. OpenAI stated that users can continue to access ChatGPT through the ChatGPT website (chat.openai.com), mobile apps (iOS and Android), and the AI-enabled browser ChatGPT Atlas.
How to Save Old Chats
If you were using ChatGPT on WhatsApp and want to preserve your old chats, OpenAI has also provided a way to do so. Users can save all chats by linking their ChatGPT account to their ChatGPT profile in WhatsApp.
Why did Meta make this decision?
Meta stated that running AI bots on WhatsApp was putting too much pressure on its data servers. Furthermore, Meta fears that third-party bots are impacting users of its own Meta AI assistant. The company will now only allow bots on WhatsApp that comply with the rules of its official Business API.
What's next for ChatGPT users?
OpenAI stated that ChatGPT will be removed from WhatsApp, but its experience will be enhanced across web, app, and browser platforms. The company stated, "ChatGPT isn't going anywhere, it's just moving beyond WhatsApp."
When will it be implemented?
This change will take effect January 15, 2026. Meta has given business accounts and developers time to update their API models.
This move by Meta will limit AI chatting on WhatsApp, but OpenAI has created several easy options for ChatGPT users. Users will still be able to use ChatGPT seamlessly through the website, mobile app, or Atlas browser.
