Rohini Kalam, a bronze medalist at the 8th Asian Championship in Abu Dhabi and a Jujitsu martial arts coach, was found dead at her home in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh. According to local reports, the 28-year-old athlete was discovered hanging by her sister Roshni when no other family members were at home. Police said initial findings suggest suicide, though no note has been recovered.
What led to Rohini Kalam’s death
A police probe is underway to determine the cause of Rohini’s death. Her sister Roshni told NDTV that Rohini had been under considerable stress related to her job at a school in Ashta, where she worked as a martial arts coach.
“She was worried about her job. The faculty at her school were troubling her. Her school's principal was troubling her. I could sense it from the way she was speaking on her phone,” Roshni said.
Rohini had travelled from Ashta to her hometown Dewas on Saturday. On Sunday morning, she reportedly had her usual tea and breakfast before speaking to someone on the phone and locking herself in her room. Later, when her mother and sister returned from a temple visit, they found her dead.
IPS dream and pursuit of Vikram Award
Rohini’s father, a retired Bank Note Press employee, told NDTV that his daughter dreamed of becoming an IPS officer and had been working towards the Vikram Award for the past two years. He said she had been under significant pressure at work and had also been resisting marriage proposals.
The family shared that Rohini underwent major surgery five months ago and was still recovering from physical ailments. They believe this, along with work-related stress, may have affected her mental well-being.
Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
