New Delhi: The air quality in the national capital continued to remain in the ‘very poor category on Monday morning. Relief may be on the way as the India Meterological Department (IMD) has forecast light rainfall later in the day.
According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 315 at 6 am on Monday. Neighbouring Noida and Ghaziabad also reported ‘very poor’ air quality, with AQI readings of 331 and 321, respectively, as per the CPCB’s SAMEER app.
However, conditions were marginally better in Greater Noida (288) and Gurugram (244), where the air quality fell in the ‘poor’ category. Faridabad showed some improvement. The city recorded a ‘moderate’ AQI of 198.
The CPCB classifies AQI values between 301 and 400 as ‘very poor,’ while readings above 400 fall in the ‘severe’ range.
Relief likely as rains expectedThe IMD has predicted light rains or drizzles over Delhi-NCR from October 27. It could help disperse pollutants and improve air quality. The weather agency also said that the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 29 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to be 18 degrees Celsius.
On Sunday, Delhi recorded its lowest October temperature in two years, 15.8 degrees Celsius which was 1.4 degrees below normal. The IMD noted that the city’s minimum temperature had dropped to 15.9 degrees Celsius in October 2023 and 17.4 degrees Celsius the year before.
NDMC expands anti-pollution measuresMeanwhile, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has launched the second phase of its “mist sprayer project” to combat rising pollution levels. The initiative began on Sunday and covers the Shanti Path and Africa Avenue stretches following the success of the first phase at Lodhi Road.
Mist sprayers are mounted on electric poles and they release fine droplets of treated water that help settle dust and particulate matter, thereby, improving air quality. The NDMC said that the system also assists in watering roadside plants and conserving water.
