The 25-year-old Prithvi Shaw made his way to the history books when he slammed a century in a mere 72 balls for Maharashtra against Chandigarh. This is till date the joint sixth-fastest 100 in Ranji Trophy history. It’s his first ton of the domestic season and 14th first-class century. It could also be seen as a message for Ajit Agarkar and the rest of the selectors.
Prithvi Shaw on the Comeback TrailShaw has not played international cricket since 2021. He turns 26 in less than two weeks so there is time on his side. He shifted from Mumbai to Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy and is now beginning to find his feet in the new team. He began with a duck vs Kerala but made up with 75 in the same match. In this game he first made just eight but now has proved he belongs at the top level.

The fastest Ranji Trophy 100 belongs to Rishabh Pant who in 2016-17 made it in just 48 balls. Meanwhile, Shaw announced his arrival in Tests in 2018 with a century but his career plummeted after that. Also, his attitude, fitness and antiques off the field put him in the news for all the wrong reasons. However, it seems that the young man is finally putting it all behind him.
If Shaw produces more such knocks, the selectors are bound to take notice. With the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having left the Test scene and slowly leaving international cricket as well, doors can open if Shaw keeps himself on the selectors’ radar.

The new season of the Ranji Trophy has only begun. One has to wait and see if Shaw keeps up the good form. If he does we could see a comeback sooner rather than later. But it will not be easy as he has tough competition. So let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Shaw was not sold in the IPL 2025 auction so he has a point to prove there as well. He has a long way to go but he is on the correct path. Once hailed as the next big thing, Shaw will aim to make up for lost time and regain his place in the Indian team. Can it happen? Yes, it can. Will it happen? That remains to be seen.
