Synopsis

Indian cricket captain Shreyas Iyer was hospitalized in Sydney after suffering a spleen laceration from a rib cage injury during a match against Australia. Scans confirmed the injury, and he is reportedly stable and recovering well. The spleen, a vital organ for filtering blood and fighting infections, can cause severe internal bleeding if ruptured.

Shreyas Iyer, Indian cricket's ODI captain, was rushed to a hospital in Sydney after suffering an internal bleeding from a rib cage injury during the third match against Australia. Iyer suffered the injury while taking a catch to dismiss Alex Carey, and he was later rushed to the hospital.

On Monday, BCCI released a statement which read, "Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region... He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well."

Shreyas Iyer's spleen ruptured: What is spleen laceration?

The spleen is a soft, fist-sized organ located in the upper side of the abdomen. It filters and stores roughly one-fourth of the body’s red blood cells and platelets and also produces white blood cells that help fight infections. It's fragile structure and thin outer capsule makes it vulnerable to injury and if a rupture occurs, it can lead to severe internal bleeding, requiring urgent medical care, often involving surgical intervention.

A ruptured spleen is a critical medical emergency that can cause severe internal bleeding. Due to its delicate structure and rich blood supply, the spleen is among the most vulnerable organs in the abdomen and can be injured easily.

"There is a soft part inside our body on the left side, just below the ribs it is called the spleen. When someone gets a strong hit there, that part can tear, or bleed inside. This is called a spleen laceration. There are 5 grades of splenic injury. In the first 2 grades, we can go for conservative management if the patient’s vitals are stable. But between grade 3 and 5, a patient needs urgent surgical intervention, as it can be life threatening if left untreated," Dr. Brajesh Kumar Mishra, head and consultant, emergency and trauma, Asian Hospital was quoted as saying by Money Control.

What causes spleen rupture?

Generally, spleen ruptures occur due to traumatic injuries and in 50 to 75 percent of the cases, car accidents are responsible for it. High-impact contact sports like football and hockey also carry significant risk. In other instances, severe blows — such as punches, stab wounds, or gunshot injuries — can lead to spleen rupture.

Symptoms of spleen laceration

According to Dr Mishra, if a spleen rupture occurs, the person may feel dizzy, weak or also look pale. The individual may experience pain on the left side of the belly or under the ribs sometimes even in the left shoulder. All of these signs suggest that there is blood leaking that is happening inside. Quick medical help is required in such situations, he explained.

Can spleen rupture impact other organs?

Dr Mishra explained that if the spleen is injured, blood may leak into the abdominal cavity and put pressure on nearby organs such as the kidneys, stomach, or lungs. The spleen also plays a vital role in filtering the blood and supporting the immune system, so any damage can weaken the body’s ability to fight infections.

Many people are concerned about how long Iyer’s recovery might take. Addressing this, Dr. Mishra said, “If the injury is minor, it can heal with rest in about two to three months. However, in cases of severe damage where thE spleen needs to be removed, the recovery period is usually longer.”

Shreyas Iyer health update

Shreyas Iyer has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital on Monday and is now in a stable condition, easing concerns over his health. “He has been shifted out of ICU and may take a few more days before he is discharged from hospital in Sydney,” a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity. Sources indicated that Iyer's family members are expected to travel to Sydney soon to be by his side as he continues to recover.
