News India Live, Digital Desk: As soon as the winter season arrives, our skin starts looking dry, stretched and lifeless. Cold winds steal all the moisture from the skin and to avoid this dryness, we use various types of lotions and moisturizers after bathing. But do you know that in Ayurveda there is a solution to this problem which is no less than an elixir not only for the skin but for the entire body? This solution is – oil massage before bathing, which is called ‘Abhyanga’ in the language of Ayurveda. This is not just a beauty routine, but a powerful Ayurvedic process that nourishes the body both inside and out. Why is massaging before bathing so beneficial? You must have often heard the elders in your house advising you to do so. There are deep scientific and Ayurvedic reasons behind this. Creates a protective shield on the skin: When you apply oil on the body before bathing, it creates a protective shield on the skin. Due to this, water and soap are not able to strip away the natural oil of your skin while bathing and the moisture of the skin gets locked inside. Keeps the body warm: In winter, our body needs extra heat. Oil, especially sesame oil, is hot in nature. Massaging it before bathing increases body heat, improves blood circulation and reduces the effect of cold. Relaxes muscles and joints: Massaging reduces muscle tension and increases lubrication in joints, which provides relief from pain and stiffness in winter. It is the best remedy to pacify Vata dosha, which naturally increases in winters. Helpful in deep sleep: Oil massage calms our nervous system, which reduces stress and helps in good sleep at night. How to do ‘Abhyanga’ and which oil is best? Best oil: Sesame oil is considered best for winters. Its nature is hot. Apart from this, you can also use mustard oil or almond oil. Simple method: Make the oil lukewarm. Now apply it on your entire body, from head to soles of feet, massaging gently in circular motion. Massage for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Wait: After applying the oil, wait for at least 15-20 minutes, so that the oil gets absorbed inside the skin properly. Take a bath: Now take a bath with lukewarm water. You should try to minimize the use of soap, so that the oil remains nourished. After bathing, you will find that your skin is feeling soft, shiny and healthy even without any lotion. This winter, try this Ayurvedic tradition and feel the magical change in your skin and health.
