Govt clears Justice Kant as next Chief Justice of India

President has officially approved Justice Surya Kant's appointment as the next Chief Justice of India. Set to assume office on November 24, 2025, Justice Kant will take the helm as the 53rd CJI, with his term expected to stretch until February 9, 2027.

New Delhi: The Centre has cleared the appointment of justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice of India. "In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November 2025," Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal posted on X, adding: "I convey my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to him."

CJI BR Gavai had earlier this week recommended justice Kant as his successor. CJI Gavai is set to demit office on November 23. Justice Kant will assume charge on November 24 as the 53rd CJI. He is slated to serve for nearly 15 months, until February 9, 2027.
