New Delhi. Scientists around the world have their eyes on Comet 3I/ATLAS. It has come from outside our solar system. Scientists are constantly monitoring it to understand its unique characteristics and improve space security. This is the third interstellar comet to arrive in our solar system. After passing close to the Sun, it will now come closest to the Earth on 19 December 2025. Many types of claims are being made about Comet 3I/ATLAS.

According to NASA scientists, this comet passed close to the sun today. During this period its distance was 21 crore km. Scientists say that its behavior can reveal many unsolved mysteries of the universe. This comet was discovered by the Atlas Telescope of the American space agency NASA. It remains a mystery to scientists due to its rare properties, such as ‘ant tail’ and abundance of carbon dioxide.

According to NASA, there is no danger of it colliding even after passing close to the Sun and Earth. Earlier, there were mysterious comets ‘Oumuamua’ (2017) and Borisov (2019) coming from outside our solar system. However, comet 3I/ATLAS quickly caught hold of scientists.

When was it discovered?
It was first discovered on July 1, 2025 by NASA’s Atlas Telescope in Chile. Its orbit is hyperbolic. This means that it will pass and never come back. On October 30 i.e. today this comet was closest to the Sun. During this time its icy surface melted due to the heat of the sun. This created a bright coma (blurry cover) and a long tail.

Will there be a collision with Earth?
Comet 3I/ATLAS will pass close to Earth on 19 December 2025. However, during this period it will remain at a very safe distance of about 27 crore km. This distance is so great that there is no possibility of any kind of collision. NASA has carefully calculated the path of 3I/ATLAS. It has become clear that there is no threat to the Earth or any other planet.

Scientists’ shocking revelation
Scientists have observed some unusual behavior in it. Harvard University astronomer Avi Loeb raised the possibility of its unnatural origin, after which there was some speculation. But NASA scientists have confirmed that it is a natural object and this speculation has not been proven yet. 3I/ATLAS gives scientists a great opportunity to closely study things outside our solar system. NASA scientists have made it clear that this is not an alien spacecraft.
