Officers descended on Hollyhedge Road, near the Benchill Metrolink tram stop in south Manchester, shortly after 2pm on Monday afternoon following reports that a group of teenagers were fighting with machetes.
Photos from the scene showed a large police presence outside a row of local shops, with armed officers detaining a teenager. Witnesses described chaotic scenes, claiming that 'loads of kids' were seen 'fighting with machetes.'
One social media user said a knife had been pulled earlier on a nearby tram, leaving passengers frightened, Manchester Evening News reported.
One person wrote on social media: "Someone pulled a knife out on the tram my daughter was on."
Someone else wrote: Another added: "K***head with a machete just scared the s*** out of my cousin" followed by "fighting with machetes, loads of kids."
