Synopsis

In a surprising turn of events, Zohran Mamdani has emerged victorious in the race for mayor of New York City. However, a recent poll reveals a worrisome trend: many New Yorkers are weighing the option of fleeing the city if Mamdani assumes leadership. This potential shift could pose significant economic repercussions for New York.

Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. Zohran Mamdani will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on January 1.

However, a few days before the New York mayoral election, a new poll revealed a growing concern: nearly a million New Yorkers are considering leaving the city if Mamdani secures the mayor’s office. The poll suggests that this could spark a historic exodus, one that may have profound economic repercussions for the city in the years to come.

Million New Yorkers to leave the city?

An alarming poll warned Monday that hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers are prepared to bolt from the Big Apple if socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins Tuesday’s mayoral race, as per New York Post. This probably shows the largest population flight in US history.

Around 765,000 people of the 8.4 million residents who call New York City home are preparing to leave, with about 9% of New Yorkers sharing that they would “definitely” leave the city if Mamdani is elected the 111th mayor, the Daily Mail reported, citing a survey conducted by J.L. Partners. If those residents were to leave, it would be equal to the population of Washington, DC, Las Vegas, or Seattle fleeing the city. Another 25% of New Yorkers — about 2.12 million — said they would “consider” packing up and leaving. Among high earners, 7% of those making over $250,000 a year said they would definitely flee.

Poll results highlighted widespread unease about the 34-year-old assemblyman taking over City Hall, warning that a mass departure could have severe economic consequences nationwide.

'Disaster, hell, cover your ears'

“If anywhere near that number actually left, the economic impact would be seismic,” pollster James Johnson told the outlet. “Older New Yorkers, Staten Islanders, and white voters are the most likely to say they would pack up and go.” “When asked to sum up what Mamdani’s New York would look like, respondents called it a ‘disaster,’ ‘hell,’ and — cover your ears, kids — a ‘sh–hole,’” he added.

The poll showed that many New Yorkers who do not support Mamdani are convinced he is going to 'destroy' America's biggest metropolis and crater its economy, sending shockwaves across the rest of the country. The poll found New Yorkers expect a wide array of the city's problems to get worse under a 'Mayor Mamdani,' including crime, antisemitism and the economy. It found 47 percent believe levels of crime and violence will get worse, with only 32 percent saying the city would be safer under Mamdani.

The poll shows that more men than women are planning to leave New York. About 12% of men and 7% of women said they are certain to move, while around one in four from each group are still thinking about it.

People between the ages of 50 and 64 were the most likely to consider leaving. In that age group, 12% said they are sure to move, and 33% said they are weighing the decision. By race, 13% of white New Yorkers and 11% of Asian residents said they definitely plan to leave the city.

Staten Island residents were the most likely to consider a move, with 21% saying they plan to go and 54% saying they are thinking about it. In comparison, 6% of Manhattan residents said they plan to leave and 20% are unsure. In Brooklyn, 8% said they would move, while 18% are undecided.

Texas governor warns on fleeing New York

Texas Governor Greg Abbott promised to place an 100 percent tariff on any New Yorker who tries to flee the Big Apple should socialist Zohran Mamdani win the mayor's race Tuesday. Abbott, a key Donald Trump ally in the Lone Star State, showed no sympathy for anyone trying to escape from New York if the socialist is elected.

'After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a[n] 100 percent tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC,' he wrote. It would be a huge barrier for the nearly one million New Yorkers preparing to flee the city should democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani win the race for mayor, as a recent poll suggested.
