Jirawadee Tonthongdaeng, a 22-year-old nursing student, was fatally struck by a car while stopping to assist victims of a multi-car collision on a highway in Thailand.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Oct. 29 on Motorway Number 7 leading to Pattaya City in Chon Buri Province, according to The Pattaya News. Police and rescue workers arrived at the scene after receiving a report around 2:30 a.m.
The initial pile-up involved four vehicles, killing a Thai driver and a South Korean tourist who were in the same car and injuring five others.
Tonthongdaeng, who was traveling with her husband from Sisaket Province, pulled over in the emergency lane upon witnessing the accident. She called emergency services and waved to warn other vehicles to slow down. Moments later, a speeding car struck her, killing her instantly. Her husband was also hit and remains in critical condition at Chon Buri Hospital.
The couple had been heading to Pattaya to celebrate her birthday, according to The Tiger. Wanchaloem is a volunteer with the Sawang Rescue Saraburi team.
Authorities have returned Tonthongdaeng’s body to her hometown for funeral rites, while police continue to investigate the accident and plan to question the survivors once they recover.
