According to a notification issued by the Finance Ministry on April 3, 2025, the Central Government has notified that every person, who has been allotted a Permanent Account Number (PN) on the basis of the Enrollment ID of the Aadhaar application form filed before October 1, 2024, should submit his Aadhaar number to the Principal Director General of Income Tax (Systems) or the Director General of Income Tax (Systems) or the said authorities, Deepesh Chheda, partner, Dhruv Advisors, said in an ET report. The person authorized by the Central Board of Direct Taxes will have to inform on or before December 31, 2025, or by such date as may be specified in this behalf by the Central Board of Direct Taxes.

If someone has obtained PAN card using Aadhaar enrollment ID, will he also have to re-link it?

Deepesh Chheda answered yes. He said that this is the group which is required to link PAN by December 31, 2025. Even if the PAN card is generated using the Aadhaar enrollment ID, the linking process will still have to be completed after the Aadhaar number is generated. The Income Tax e-filing portal allows such users to easily link Aadhaar with PAN online.

But inoperative PAN may prevent future financial activities like new investments, share transactions or KYC updates. In short, as long as your current assets remain intact, your ability to transact or comply with tax regulations remains halted until the PAN is reactivated.
