The advisory issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) comes amid reports of deaths of children allegedly due to contaminated cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh.
What is said in the consultation
DGHS, which comes under the Health Ministry, said in the advisory that cough syrup is generally not recommended for children under five years of age. It added that for older people, their use should be based on careful clinical assessment, close monitoring, strict adherence to appropriate dosage, etc. Apart from this, the advisory issued by Dr. Sunita Sharma of DGHS said that people can also be sensitized towards following the prescriptions of doctors. It emphasizes judicious prescription of cough syrup for children. It states that severe cough disorders in children mostly resolve on their own and often without medication.
In this advisory, all healthcare centers and clinical units have been asked to ensure procurement and distribution of properly prepared products. It says, “Physicians and pharmacists in the public and private sector need to be sensitive to maintain these standards of care.” All State/UT Health Departments, District Health Authorities and clinical establishments/healthcare centers are requested to implement and disseminate this advisory in Government dispensaries, primary health centres, community health centres, district hospitals and medical institutions.
