Jaggery is not only tasty in winter but is also considered very beneficial for health. As winter approaches, its use increases in all homes. Some people make jaggery laddus and chikkis while some people like to drink jaggery tea. But nowadays adulterated (fake) jaggery available in the market can also cause harm to health. In such a situation, it is very important to identify real and fake jaggery. Here are some easy home tricks (tricks) by which you can identify real and fake jaggery at home.

identify by color

The color of real jaggery is light brown or golden brown. Fake jaggery is usually very shiny, red or dark brown – because colors or chemicals are added to it.

melting test

Take some jaggery in a bowl and heat it on gas. If the jaggery melts clearly and evenly, then it is pure. If foam or dirt is visible in it or there is a strong smell, then it may be fake.

water test

Add a small piece of jaggery in a glass of water. The real jaggery will slowly settle down and the water will remain clear. Fake jaggery will start dissolving in water or will float on top – because it is adulterated.

Identify by taste and texture

The taste of real jaggery is sweet, but it has a slight smell of raw sugarcane. The taste of fake jaggery may feel a bit bitter, astringent or chemical-like. Real jaggery is a little sticky when held in hand, whereas fake jaggery is harder and smoother.

soda test

Grind some jaggery in a bowl, dissolve it in water and add some baking soda in it. If foam starts forming or color changes, then understand that there is chemical adulteration in it. If there is no reaction, the jaggery is pure.

take care

Always buy jaggery from a trusted brand or local farmers. Avoid buying too cheap or excessively shiny jaggery.
