Ex-Liverpool star's "nasty" challenge leaves PSG player in tears as he's forced off

PSG defender Achraf Hakimi left the pitch in tears on Tuesday night as he was helped off the pitch after rolling his ankle following a horrendous tackle from Luis Diaz - who was sent-off as a result.

The European champions were beaten at the Parc des Princes by Bayern Munich, who finished the game with ten men. Diaz, who moved to Germany from Liverpool in the summer, was given his marching orders having scored the opening two goals of the game.

Hakimi immediately went down and was clearly in pain as he received treatment. The emotion then became evident with the Moroccan covering his face as he began tearing up with a team-mate and a staff member needing to help him off the pitch.

It was only after a VAR review that Bayern's Colombian winner was shown a red card, but the Bundesliga leaders were still able to maintain their advantage and leave with all three points despite PSG pulling a goal back.

It was an evening to forget for Luis Enrique who, alongside losing Hakimi, also saw Ousmane Demebe leave the pitch. The Frenchman looked like he'd score the game's opening goal but as the VAR checked for offside the Ballon d'Or winner looked to be in discomfort. After the goal was chalked off he was subbed off and walked straight down the tunnel to the dressing room.

The PSG boss was quizzed about the state of the duo after the match and said: "I don’t know. We have to wait until tomorrow, after the medical exams, to see exactly what injuries the two players have. Dembele’s injury has nothing to do with his previous one. But he played for as long as you saw. Achraf is part of football. It’s a contact sport."

Bayern star Joshua Kimmich conceded, having seen the tackle, that it didn't look good with frustration getting the better of Diaz. “Lucho was a bit frustrated in that situation. He was a little annoyed that he lost the ball," said the German.

"I saw it briefly on the screen. He had actually slid in beside the man, and Hakimi wanted to get his body in front of him at that moment, and that's why he caught him low. But it does look nasty.”

Tuesday night was only the second time PSG had been beaten this season and they are still well placed in Ligue 1 and the Champions League. Enrique though owned the fact that Bayern were better than them on the night.

He said: "Bayern were the better team in the first half. They created more chances than we did. We gave away a lot of opportunities in the first half. When you give away too much, it's normal to be losing the game at half-time. However, the second half was different because we had an extra player. I can’t remember a single match with the full squad, but it’s our responsibility to do better. Today we have to accept that the opponent was better than us."
