Celebrating Cultural Heritage at Wangala Festival
Tura, Nov 6: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma, reaffirmed his administration's dedication to safeguarding and promoting the state's diverse cultural heritage during the 49th Wangala Festival.
Participating in the Garo community's post-harvest thanksgiving ceremony, Sangma highlighted various initiatives launched by the state government aimed at fostering research into indigenous cultures and traditions.
Expressing his joy at being part of the festivities, he stated, "We take immense pride in our rich heritage and are committed to its preservation and promotion."
Held annually after the harvest, the Wangala Festival, also known as the "100 Drums Festival," is a celebration of gratitude towards Misi Saljong, the Sun God, for a successful harvest.
This vibrant festival features traditional dance, music, and attire from the Garo community, showcasing their profound connection to nature and agricultural practices.

Additionally, Sangma announced the establishment of a committee tasked with researching the historical journey of the Garo people from Tibet, aiming to trace their lineage and migration patterns to the North East.
He expressed gratitude to all Wangala troupes and the organizing committee for their dedication to preserving this tradition for nearly fifty years.
To enhance access to the festival venue, the Chief Minister revealed a funding allocation of Rs 20 crore for the construction of an approach road to Wangala A'dam.
Furthermore, he presented a cheque of Rs 25 lakh to the festival organizers and assured them of the government's full support for the upcoming Golden Jubilee celebrations next year.
