Countryfile's Adam Henson announced some sad news during Sunday's instalment of the BBC programme. Adam met the three finalists competing for the title of Young Countryside Champion at this year's BBC Food & Farming Awards.
However, it was beekeeper Dafydd Pett's story that took an emotional turn. The finalist from Bridgend explained that he wanted to continue beekeeping following the death of his grandfather.
Introducing the emotional segment, Adam said, "Back in June, we asked you to put forward a Young Countryside Champion for the BBC Food and Farming Awards 2025.
"A young person who made a real difference to the UK countryside, and from all the brilliant nominees, we've had to narrow it down to just three finalists.
"So let's find out more about those who made the shortlist. 22-year-old David Pett is on a mission to keep Wales buzzing. Inspired by his granddad, he's passionate about protecting pollinators and sharing his love for beekeeping with others."
Sharing his story and where his passion began, Dafydd explained, "My grandfather first got me into beekeeping when I was 11 years old.
"First of all, it was one day a weekend, and then we ended up spending the whole weekend together doing the beekeeping. At that time, I completely fell in love with it."
Dafydd continued, "In 2017, unfortunately, he passed away. It was an emotional time. Nobody else in the family had ever been interested in the bees.
"So if I didn't take them on at 14 years of age, they would have been abandoned, and that's not what my grandfather would have wanted."
He added, "It was such a responsibility at such a young age. The first time I opened the hive, I'll be completely honest, I lost some confidence because I didn't have my grandfather."
"I kind of stepped up and just thought to just get stuck in and run them the way that my grandfather would have wanted them to be run.
"I knew that having those bees, as well as making a positive impact on our ecosystem. It made me feel really proud."
