The UK is home to many beautiful market towns. Some are surrounded by hills while others lie next to rivers or estuaries. But there is one market town in Devon that's been called "the best place you'll visit in the UK". It sits at the head of an estuary and is surrounded by green countryside. There's a traditional high street with small shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants.
The town is peaceful but has plenty to do. Visitors can explore the local area, go walking, or head to nearby beaches like Slapton, Salcombe and East Portlemouth. It also has a cinema, a leisure centre with a swimming pool, and easy access to water sports such as paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing.
The town is called Kingsbridge and it's in the South Devon National Landscape.
Visit South Devon says: "If you love the hustle and bustle of a traditional English market town, you'll love the South Devon estuary town of Kingsbridge."
There are many small independent shops, galleries and antique stores. The town also holds regular events throughout the year, including food festivals, summer fairs, a September show, and a big Christmas celebration.
What's more, Kingsbridge is a great place to stay if you want to explore South Devon.
There are hundreds of walking routes nearby, and the town itself has hidden spots like Squeezebelly Alley (one of the narrowest public thoroughfares in the UK), community gardens, and even a miniature railway.
The town also has a long history. Its name comes from an old bridge that once joined two royal estates.
It became a market town in the 13th century and later grew through shipbuilding, farming and milling.
Visit Devon says: "Filled with a friendly, good-natured atmosphere, welcoming locals and fascinating history, Kingsbridge is a wonderful destination to add to your itinerary."
Those who have visited before completely agree. One person said on TripAdvisor: "We were visiting nearby Salcombe when someone mentioned Kingsbridge.
"We decided to go and see it and it was amazing. The boats and the river are a stand out and the atmosphere in the town is great."
Another wrote: "Kingsbridge is one of those market towns that's very overlooked but when you find it you'll want to come back over and over again. It's just beautiful."
A third added: "I'll go as far as to say that it's the best place you'll visit in the UK ever. We've visited in the summer and in winter and there are no crowds. It's peaceful yet full of things to do."
Someone else said: "Kingsbridge looks like something from a different era. There's a church overlooking the town and the river makes it special."
