New Delhi: The Election Commission will now use modern AI technology in the electoral roll intensive review (SIR) process. In West Bengal, through this technology, bogus and dead voters can be identified more accurately. A senior official said that with the help of AI, facial similarity analysis will be done in the photographs included in the voter list, so that even if the same person is registered at different places, he can be immediately identified.
The official said that recently complaints of misuse of photographs, especially of tourist voters, have increased, due to which the decision has been taken to use AI technology. He explained that through AI based face-matching technology, all such photographs will be found where the photograph of the same person is seen at multiple places in the voter list. Although AI technology may become helpful, the role of the Booth Level Officer (BLO) will remain central. Like before, the BLO will have to go to the voters’ homes and take their photographs and when the form is submitted by the Booth Level Agent (BLA), the BLO will also have to personally verify the signature.
The officer said that if any bogus or dead voter is found after investigation, then the responsibility for the same will lie with the BLO of the concerned centre. Last month, the Election Commission had announced to conduct the second phase of SIR process in the country. This phase includes 12 states and union territories.
