Railways: Indian Railways' new initiative: Passengers will get infection-free air in train coaches..
Indiaemploymentnews | November 20, 2025 4:40 PM CST

The air in trains will soon be completely free of the risk of infection. Whether it's winter, summer, or rain, passengers will be able to enjoy a carefree journey. This is because the Railways will utilize wireless robotic ultraviolet UV-C disinfection technology. This technology will eliminate harmful germs in train coaches.

After this new initiative was successful on several major trains of the Delhi Railway Division, the Railway Board directed all zones to adopt it.

M/s GreenSkies Aviation Pvt. Ltd., a Gurgaon, Haryana-based company, conducted a 90-day trial of wireless robotic ultraviolet UV-C disinfection technology on several Delhi trains.

This resulted in a 99.99% reduction in bacterial load. The disinfection robot was developed to achieve quick and precise sanitation.

The robot is equipped with a digital system. It includes a mobile platform and an ultraviolet (UV-C) disinfection baton. It also uses a series of ultrasonic sensors.

Microorganisms are inactivated by ultraviolet rays.
This technology inactivates microorganisms present on surfaces and in the air. It is helpful in disinfecting train coaches.

Ultraviolet rays emitted from this device damage the DNA and RNA of bacteria and viruses at a wavelength of 254 nanometers, thereby disinfecting the targeted area.

This technology integrates train temperature, ventilation, and air conditioning, resulting in continuous purification of the circulating air, helping to reduce the airborne transmission of pathogenic germs. This is a dry, chemical-free process and does not leave any harmful residues.

This is the Board's order.
Ajay Jha, Director of Environment and Housekeeping Management at the Board, has sent a letter to all Principal Chief Engineers, advising them to consult with the RDSO (Research Design and Standards Organization).

Explore the possibility of conducting technical or procedural trials on adopting UV-C technology for coach disinfection at their locations for one year. If necessary, you can seek help from Northern Railway.

Expert Opinion
Adopting UV-C technology for coach disinfection is a good step. Modern ROs also have ultraviolet technology, which inactivates bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms present in the water. Ultraviolet technology helps reduce the impact of microorganisms.

Reducing the mobility of microorganisms in the air will reduce the risk of infection. - Dr. DB Singh, retired scientist, Central Mining and Fuel Research Institute

The wireless robotic UV-C disinfection device is an environmentally friendly, chemical-free disinfection solution. It is certified by ICMR CSIO.

These chemicals work without a single drop of water or plastic, reducing the environmental burden associated with chemical-based cleaning. This aligns with today's global environmental and health priorities.

This is a sustainable and green solution. - Captain Pawan Kumar Arora, Senior Commander, Director Operations, GreenSkies Aviation Pvt. Ltd.
