Lord Shiva is revered for his compassion, often granting the desires of his followers even when offered just a humble pot of water with genuine intent. Many devotees choose to install a Shivalinga in their homes for worship instead of visiting temples. However, is it permissible to have a Shivalinga at home, and what guidelines should be followed?
Astrologer Pandit Nandkishore Mudgal, associated with the Mudgal Astrology Center at Pagal Baba Ashram in Deoghar, shares insights on this topic.
Rules and Procedures for Home Installation
Installation Guidelines:
According to Astrologer Mudgal, it is acceptable to install a Shivalinga at home, provided certain rules are adhered to.
Consecration and Size:
Before beginning worship, the Shivalinga must be properly consecrated. Importantly, the size of the Shivalinga should not exceed that of a thumb.
Designated Worship Area:
A Shivalinga should only be placed in a dedicated prayer room. If such a space is unavailable, it is advisable to refrain from installation.
Purchasing Guidelines:
After visiting a pilgrimage site, avoid buying a Shivalinga from there to take home directly.
Post-Worship Practices:
For those with a Shivalinga at home, daily worship and food offerings are essential. During Abhishekam with water or milk, ensure the Shivalinga is placed in a vessel, and any leftover liquid should be disposed of in a river.
The Pandit emphasizes that while Lord Shiva is forgiving, he can also be easily provoked. Therefore, worship should be conducted with the highest level of discipline and purity.
