Shaan believes authenticity is still a musician’s strongest currency—even in an era shaped by algorithms and AI. Calling AI voice-cloning a gimmick, the singer insists it cannot replace real artistry. “Originals go viral, not remixes or replicas,” he says, adding that stronger copyright systems can protect singers from misuse of their voices. For him, technology should enhance creativity, not imitate it.
Having witnessed the first wave of indi-pop in the 90s, Shaan sees today’s independent scene as its most exciting evolution. With direct-to-consumer platforms democratizing discovery, artists no longer need labels or gatekeepers to break through. “During my time, there were limited opportunities and creative freedom. Today, anyone, anywhere, with any kind of music, can make it big,” he says. For all the nostalgia around 90s pop, Shaan believes its real appeal lies in its honesty—something he hopes artists continue to chase, no matter how much the tech changes.
On Zubeen Garg ...
Remembering Zubeen Garg, Shaan calls him an extraordinary, fearless artist who lived on his own terms. "Beyond music, Zubeen lived every moment of his life on his own terms. As much as he was passionate about his music, he was deeply concerned about his people and nature," he says.
