Synopsis

Anupam Kher, a renowned Bollywood actor, faced severe financial hardship in the early 2000s after a failed television production venture. His bank balance reportedly dwindled to a few hundred rupees, with his assets pledged as collateral. Despite this hidden struggle amidst professional success, Kher has since rebuilt his finances and now commands a significant fee per film.

Anupam Kher recently reflected on the time he went bankrupt
Although Anupam Kher has long been regarded as one of Bollywood’s most respected and dependable performers, he once went through an intense period of financial turmoil. Speaking on Unfiltered With Samdish, the actor recounted how an ambitious dream nearly pushed him to the brink.

In the early 2000s, he attempted to break into television production and build a major presence in the industry, but the venture quickly collapsed. By 2004, his finances were in such poor shape that his bank balance reportedly fell to only a few hundred rupees. According to the actor, the situation worsened because he and his family had begun taking loans, and interest kept increasing until the amount became overwhelming. His financial advisor eventually informed him that he was close to complete bankruptcy, with both his residence and office already pledged as collateral.

“We were borrowing money. And I was the first person in my family to ever see Rs 10,000 at once in our family’s 100-year existence. The interest kept mounting,, and it went so high that my chartered accountant told me we were on the verge of bankruptcy because there was only Rs 400 left in the bank. Both my house and office were mortgaged..." he reminisced.

A Hidden Struggle Amid Professional Success

This personal crisis unfolded at a time when Kher was appearing in several major films back-to-back, creating an outward impression that his career and finances were thriving.

In reality, he was silently navigating a severe monetary setback while maintaining his public image as a highly successful performer. Despite the immense pressure, he gradually rebuilt his financial footing. Over the years, he not only regained stability but also reached a far more secure position. Today, he states that he commands a fee of roughly two to three crore rupees for each film he signs, reflecting the strong standing he has rebuilt for himself in the industry.

Present-Day Wealth and Income Sources

Reports from Koimoi estimate that Anupam Kher’s current net worth is around ₹405 crore, underscoring how significantly his circumstances have changed since those difficult years. A separate report from DNA suggests that his remuneration for films ranges from three to five crore rupees, and his yearly income is approximately ₹30 crore.

Contribution Beyond Acting

In addition to his film career, Kher also established a prominent acting institute. In 2005, he launched Actors Prepares, which has grown into a respected training centre offering courses in acting, writing, and performance. The school has helped nurture numerous emerging talents, adding another dimension to his legacy in Indian cinema.
