With the onset of winter, new splendor comes to the gardens (Winter Gardening). The sun is mild, the air is cool, and the soil of the plants remains moist for a long time. In such weather, everyone thinks that all the plants will grow easily, but the reality is exactly the opposite. Many plants are unable to withstand the cold and wither and die within a few days.

Often people water them lovingly and add the right soil, but still the plants do not survive. The reason is that these plants are not made for severe cold. If you want to protect your garden this winter season, it is very important to know which plants are best to stay away from in winter.

Which plants to avoid in winter and why?

The fall in winter temperatures not only affects the leaves but also directly affects the roots and cells of the plants. Especially those plants which have soft leaves, need more moisture and are dependent on hot environment, they are not able to handle themselves in cold. When the temperature drops below 10 degrees, many plants go into shock and their growth immediately stops. For this reason, experts advise every year that some plants should not be planted in the winter season, no matter how beautiful or popular their appearance is.

1. Basil

Tulsi is planted in every house in India, but this plant is considered the biggest enemy of cold. As the temperature drops, its leaves start turning black and the roots start rotting. Tulsi is a tropical plant, which needs warm environment and constant sunlight. But the dew and cold air of winter morning start freezing its cells, due to which the plant is unable to grow. Many people keep watering Tulsi daily in winter, due to which the soil becomes more cold and moist, and the plant spoils quickly. If there is basil in the house, do not leave it in the open at all. It is best to keep it in a sunny corner or near an interior window.

2. Money Plant

Money plant may be considered an indoor plant, but cold is its enemy. Its leaves are soft and start turning yellow as soon as the temperature decreases. The moist air of winter delivers cold water to its roots and this causes root rot of the plant. Many people mistakenly keep watering the money plant repeatedly even in winter, due to which the roots rot. Therefore, do not keep the money plant outside in winter. Light sunlight coming from the window and less water can keep it safe.

3. Croton

Croton is a plant with beautiful colorful leaves, but its beauty does not last in winter. Those who have this plant on their terrace or balcony will notice that its leaves start falling as soon as the temperature drops. The reason is that croton leaves change color in summer, but in cold the moisture starts accumulating in them. Due to this the plant goes into shock and its growth stops. Do not keep it outside in winter, especially if the temperature is below 12 degrees. It is important to keep it indoors, where the temperature remains stable.

4. Rubber Plant

The rubber plant looks strong, but its roots start freezing in the cold. Especially the cold air and fog in the morning creates spots in its leaves. This plant grows well in hot and dry weather, but as soon as the temperature comes around 8–10 degrees, its growth stops. The roots get damaged due to the soil remaining wet for a long time, and the plant starts becoming weak. Do not make the mistake of planting rubber plant in winter. This plant starts growing again only after the cold ends.

Why do plants spoil quickly in winter?

Most people think that plants demand less water in winter, so they do not need much care. But the real problem lies here. In cold weather, the soil remains wet for a long time, due to which the roots of the plants start rotting. As temperatures drop, plant cells shrink and the plant goes into defense mode. In such a situation, if the plant is not able to tolerate the temperature, then its leaves, stem and roots all get affected. This is the reason why some plants are not able to bear the winter season.

What to do so that your plants remain safe in the cold?

It is important to know which plants deteriorate in cold, but what is even more important is their safety. First of all, keep the plants at a place where there is no dew in the morning. Water sparingly, only when the soil is almost dry. Bring plants indoors at night, especially if it’s very cold outside. If you already have plants that can’t tolerate cold, keep them in a sunny spot and away from direct wind.
