The coastal regions of Tamil Nadu are currently under close observation as Cyclone Dithwah gradually moves north-northwest towards Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Sunday, indicating a likelihood of worsening weather conditions in the coming hours.
Flight Disruptions at Chennai Airport
Due to the cyclone's effects, operations at Chennai Airport have been significantly disrupted. Airport authorities reported that a total of 47 flights, comprising 36 domestic and 11 international, have been canceled today. Officials have warned that if wind speeds increase, the number of canceled flights may rise further. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updates on flight statuses.
Cyclone's Movement and Forecast
According to the IMD, the cyclone has been advancing at a speed of approximately 10 kilometers per hour over the past six hours. It is expected to come very close to the coasts of northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh by Sunday morning. The weather department predicts that by Sunday evening, it could pass within about 25 kilometers of the coastline.
Weather Conditions and Warnings
The weather bulletin indicates that winds in northern coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry could reach speeds of 60–70 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially hitting 80 kilometers per hour. The sea is also expected to be turbulent with high waves. However, the department anticipates a gradual improvement in marine conditions starting from the morning of December 1. Fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea.
State Preparedness and Relief Efforts
The Tamil Nadu government has implemented extensive precautionary measures. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K. K. S. S. R. Ramachandran announced that 6,000 relief camps have been set up across the state, although very few individuals have sought refuge in them so far. He noted that a total of 28 teams from the NDRF and SDRF have been deployed, with an additional ten teams on standby. Preparations are also in place to seek assistance from the Coast Guard if necessary.
Inspection and Monitoring
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has conducted inspections in various areas to assess the situation and has also reviewed the State Disaster Force Control Room in Chennai.
Previous Impact of Cyclone Dithwah
It is important to note that Cyclone Dithwah has already caused significant devastation in Sri Lanka, where reports indicate that 123 fatalities have occurred, and 130 individuals are reported missing. Approximately 15,000 homes have been damaged, forcing around 44,000 people to seek shelter in relief camps. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining high alert across all departments in coastal districts to prevent major damage. Vigilance has been heightened throughout Tamil Nadu and the entire southern coastal region to ensure safety.
