Don’t panic if your phone restarts automatically one day. We are saying this because Google has introduced a new security feature to strengthen the security of Android users. Under this new feature, if your Android phone is locked and unused for three consecutive days, it will automatically restart. This change is being implemented by the latest version 25.14 of Google Play Services. The main purpose of this feature is to increase data security in case the phone is lost or stolen. Once the phone auto-restarts, it will go into “First Unlock” (BFU) state. In this case, all data on the phone remains encrypted and biometric features like fingerprint and face unlock do not work until the user unlocks it by entering a passcode, pattern or password.
Google believes that if a device is locked and unused for several days, it may have been lost or stolen. In such a situation, auto-restarting the phone and sending it to Strong Lock state protects the data from unwanted access. This feature is similar to the dormancy reboot feature in Apple’s iOS 18.1. Additionally, such technology already exists on privacy-focused platforms like GrapheneOS. It is noteworthy that this feature is being introduced by Google Play Services, so that it can be made available to most of the users without waiting for a major update of the Android operating system. This feature will be applicable to Android phones and tablets, but not to smartwatch devices running Wear OS.
