New Delhi. From today, a big change is coming in the hearing of cases in the Supreme Court. Now there will be no oral mentioning in the Supreme Court. CJI Surya Kant has taken this decision. This is his important decision after assuming the post of CJI. Regarding oral mentioning, CJI Surya Kant had told all the lawyers that if they have any urgent mentioning, then they will have to write about it on the slip and submit it. Chief Justice Surya Kant had said that after submitting the slip, it will be examined by the Registrar of the Supreme Court. Then if there is an urgent situation, the Supreme Court will hear the case.

Important matters like personal freedom or death penalty have been kept out of the new system of mentoring. CJI Surya Kant has said that if someone’s liberty is being taken away or if someone’s freedom is being snatched away then oral mention can be made for death penalty. CJI Surya Kant will ask to list such cases for immediate hearing. In other cases, information will have to be given to the Registrar of the Supreme Court through a slip. Earlier, after becoming CJI, Sanjeev Khanna had stopped verbal mention. After him, BR Gavai, who became CJI, started oral mentioning again.

Now let us tell you what is verbal mentioning? Through oral mentioning, lawyers in the Supreme Court could present any issue before the judge for hearing on the spot. If the judge considered the case important, he would hear the matter before or along with the listed case. Now this will not happen in the Supreme Court. On the very day of assuming office, CJI Surya Kant had refused to listen to a lawyer after an issue to a canteen was raised by him. CJI Surya Kant has made it his priority to reduce the number of cases pending in the Supreme Court, High Court and Trial Court. Oral Mentioning is a step taken in this direction. With the end of oral mentioning, all the judges in the Supreme Court will hear mostly the listed cases only.
