Curry leaves are such an important part of the Indian kitchen, whose aroma makes the food seem alive. It is used in almost every house from South India to North India in tadka, sambar, vegetables and dal. This is the reason why nowadays many people have started planting curry leaves in pots in the balcony or small garden of their house, so that they can get fresh leaves every day and also save expenses.
But the real problem arises when the plant starts turning yellow after a few weeks, leaves start falling or growth stops completely. People think that it is due to less water, more water or not enough sunlight, but the truth is that curry leaves are a delicate but intelligent plant. If it is planted considering the needs of the plant, it can become dense like a tree in the pot.
It is easy to plant curry leaves in a pot, but it will grow thick only with proper care.
Curry leaf plant is actually a plant of hot regions, which likes open sunlight, air and soil with drainage. Many people plant it in ordinary soil and this is where the problems start. The curry leaf plant is easily affected by root rot, insect attack and slow growth. Therefore, it is important that you plant it following the basic rules of kitchen gardening, the same attention has to be given here as you plant a small tree.
The first important thing is that if the soil is right then the curry leaves will automatically remain green.
Most of the curry leaf plants get spoiled due to soil. This plant never grows in heavy, clayey or water-logged soil. The soil of curry leaves should be light, loose and with drainage. Three things are required in this: 50% garden soil, 30% sand or river sand, 20% compost (dung or vermi). This type of soil will provide air to the plant’s roots, which will make the plant grow faster. Sand does not allow water to stagnate in the roots and compost gives strength to the plant. If the soil remains too wet, the roots start rotting, and the plant becomes weak and thin.
The second important thing is that the more sunlight it gets, the denser the plant will be.
Curry leaf plant is crazy about strong sunlight. It is one of those plants that require 4–6 hours of direct sunlight per day. If you keep it indoors or in a place with less light, it starts becoming thin, leaves become smaller and lighter in color, new growth stops. Due to lack of sunlight the plant goes into sleep mode. Therefore, keep it outside the house, on the balcony railing, terrace or at a place where it gets afternoon sunlight. Sunlight makes the plant stronger and the leaves develop a strong fragrance.
The third important thing is how to water, the growth of the plant depends on this.
Curry leaves are a plant which do not like excess water. People drown in love and water it every day and the roots rot. The correct way to water the curry leaf plant is to water it only when the top 1 inch layer of the soil feels dry. In 2–3 days in summer, 5–6 days in winter, very less in rains. If water stagnates once in the pot, the plant may weaken and die within a few weeks. That is why it is very important to have drainage holes in the pot. Another tip: Do not pour water directly on the roots of the plant, pour it into the soil around the plant. Due to this the roots spread and the plant becomes stronger.
If you want to grow curry leaves plant fast then these 3 small home remedies are also useful.
1. Onion peel compost
Onion peels which are saved daily in women’s kitchen are good fertilizer for this plant. Soaking it in water and adding it to the plant after 2 weeks speeds up growth.
2. Fish Amino Acids
Many people give it in South India, it makes the plant green and dense faster. Only once a month is enough.
3. Top-dressing every 30–40 days
Remove the top soil of the pot and add new soil and compost and the plant will start spreading like a bush.
Is the plant turning yellow again and again? Know its most common reasons
1. Give more water
Fungus starts growing in the roots and the plant gradually starts drying up.
2. Getting less sunlight
This plant cannot grow in shade.
3. Nutrient deficiency in soil
Curry leaves need fertilizer every month, only then the leaves remain green and shiny.
Why is it said that the curry leaf plant is lively?
Once the curry leaf plant is properly established, it lasts for years. It does not require much care, just sunlight, right soil and less water. It grows rapidly in summer and goes into slow mode in winter. Even if the plant dries up for some time in winter and looks like an empty branch, one should not worry. As soon as the weather changes, it will start putting out new leaves again.
