Jaya Bachchan has been married to Amitabh Bachchan for more than five decades. On Barkha Dutt’s podcast Mojo Story, the ‘Abhimaan’ star opened up on her marriage and also admitted that her views on marriage as an institution had changed over the years.
Reflecting on her 52-year-old marriage, Jaya explained that she and her husband were both very different people. While she is more candid and outspoken, he is diplomatic.
“He does not speak. He is not free with his opinion like I am. He keeps it to himself, but he knows how to convey what he wants to at the right time, in the right way… which I don't! That's the difference. He is a different personality; maybe that's why I married him! Can you imagine if I had married somebody like me? He would be in Vrindavan, and I would be somewhere else,” she told Dutt.
When asked if Big B has the same views on marriage as she does, she said, “He might say that it was the ‘biggest mistake of my life,’ but I don’t want to hear that.”
On the same show, she said that she felt marriage was an outdated institution and that she doesn’t encourage her granddaughter Navya to get married.
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan began their married life on June 3, 1973. Their family grew over the years with the arrival of two children, Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan.
Shweta later entered into matrimony with entrepreneur Nikhil Nanda. Together, they are the parents of two children—Navya Naveli Nanda and Agastya Nanda—both of whom belong to the youngest generation of the Bachchan–Nanda lineage.
Abhishek, on the other hand, married actor Aishwarya Rai. The couple welcomed their daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan, who is the youngest member of the Bachchan household.
Amitabh and Jaya have appeared in hit movies such as Sholay, Zanjeer, Abhimaan, and Kabhie Khushie Kabhie Gham.
