Parliament Winter Session: Just before the beginning of the winter session of Parliament, cracks have become clearly visible in the opposition alliance India Bloc. On Monday, when the Congress called a meeting with its allies to formulate a joint strategy, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) did not participate in the meeting. Due to this, questions are being raised on opposition unity.

Leaders of Congress and other allies attended the meeting of India Block Floor Leaders held on Monday morning in the office of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in the Parliament House complex. Rahul Gandhi and senior Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav also attended this meeting, but TMC’s absence became the center of discussion. According to reports, when Congress is preparing to fight against TMC in the West Bengal Assembly elections, “what is the point of sharing the stage with them every time in Delhi?” This made it clear that the political fight in Bengal can now affect their national strategy as well.

Congress’s plan on winter session

Congress held its Parliamentary Strategy Group meeting late on Sunday evening, in which it was decided that the party will try to corner the government in the winter session on important issues like national security, recent blasts in Delhi, electoral roll (SIR) and air pollution. Top leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and P. Chidambaram were present at the meeting chaired by Sonia Gandhi. However, how effective this strategy will be will depend on whether the opposition unites and succeeds in cornering the government or not.

First test of opposition unity

TMC’s absence from the meeting is a major blow to opposition unity. This means that where TMC’s regional interests are affected, it will not shy away from adopting a ‘go it alone’ policy. This is the reason why the India Bloc seems to be disintegrating in the very first test of opposition unity.

bills introduced by the government

In this winter session, the government is planning to introduce 13 major bills, the major ones being the Central Excise Amendment Bill 2025 and the Health Security-National Security Cess Bill 2025. Apart from these bills, the opposition is preparing to corner the government on the issues of SIR, air pollution and national security. But it is clear from the ongoing tussle within the opposition that the opposition may be unable to unite and open a front against the government.
