Uttarkashi: The gates of Gangotri National Park, one of India’s largest national parks and located along the border with China, have been closed for the winter season. The closure took place on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm near Gartangli and Kankhu barrier in the presence of Deputy Director Harish Negi and forest staff.
The park will reopen to tourists on April 1 next year, as it does every year after the harsh winter months. This year, 29,162 tourists and climbers from India and abroad visited the park, generating revenue of Rs 80.96 lakh.
Dharali disaster affected tourist inflow
Tourist movement was affected for nearly one and a half months due to the Dharali disaster, which reduced the overall number of visitors. The park administration had set a target of earning more than Rs 85 lakh this season, but the disaster prevented them from reaching the goal.
Trap cameras installed on main trek routes
Deputy Director Harish Negi said that before closing the gates, trap cameras were installed on the main trek routes. These cameras will help monitor wildlife activities during the winter months when human movement is restricted. The park is home to several rare species, including the snow leopard, with an estimated population of 35 individuals.
Crucial habitat for Himalayan wildlife
Gangotri National Park is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, glaciers, and alpine meadows. It is also a crucial habitat for Himalayan wildlife such as bharal (blue sheep), Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and various bird species. The park attracts thousands of trekkers and pilgrims every year, as it lies close to the sacred Gangotri temple and the origin of the river Ganga.
Gates close due to heavy snowfall and extreme cold
Every year, the park gates are closed on November 30 due to heavy snowfall and extreme cold. During this period, forest staff focus on wildlife monitoring and habitat protection. The installation of cameras is expected to provide valuable data on animal movement and behavior, especially of elusive species like the snow leopard.
The closure of Gangotri National Park marks the end of the tourist season in Uttarkashi, but preparations are already underway to welcome visitors back in April with improved facilities and renewed focus on wildlife protection.
