Jaya Bachchan, veteran actor and parliamentarian, has once again sparked off a new debate on the need for marriage when she spoke at the We The Women event in Mumbai. Jaya Bachchan never hesitates to speak her mind and has always been considered as a bastion of tradition in Bollywood, but her recent comments were quite a revelation as they reflected her embracement of the progressive side, particularly in relation to her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda.

During the event, a question was directed at Jaya Bachchan about seeing Navya putting her family first and her career later like a typical woman of the previous generation. To this, she shot back with a view that was not only frank but also quite unexpected: she expressed that she would not mind if Navya didn’t get married at all, asserting that the 28-year-old should live freely and explore life on her own terms.
After the host once again brought up the topic of marriage, Bachchan responded without a second thought that it was dated, she also mentioned that the times are completely different now and new generations do not use the old models to figure out their way of lives anymore. To her, children of this era happen to be way more conscious and “quite often several steps ahead of” adults when it comes to knowing their desires and needs.
Inspired by her own 50 years of marital relationship with Amitabh Bachchan, she made a comparison of weddings with that famous Delhi ladoo metaphor, by implying that whichever way you choose (marriage or singleness) there will be some difficulties.
Nevertheless, her message boiled down to this one point: she is for the youth to make their life fun first and be under any kind of social pressure later.
Besides this, both Bachchan and Navya have jointly supported the idea of having relationships through talks on Navya’s podcast. In one of the episodes, Jaya Bachchan opined that in today’s world emotional and mental compatibility in partnerships hold the highest value. She likewise suggested that physical chemistry should not be underestimated, by clarifying that the younger generations are more willing to familiarize themselves with these aspects before they make a commitment and hence, she finds openness to be important.
