Jakarta: The death toll from devastating floods and landslides across Asia rose past 1,100 on Monday, as Sri Lanka and Indonesia - the hardest-hit countries - deployed military personnel to assist survivors.
Separate weather systems dumped days of torrential rain on Sri Lanka, Indonesia's Sumatra, southern Thailand and northern Malaysia last week. While the region is in its monsoon season, climate change is intensifying extreme rainfall and storm events.
Relentless downpours left residents clinging to rooftops and entire villages cut off, requiring rescue by boat or helicopter. Arriving in North Sumatra on Monday, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said "the worst has passed, hopefully," adding that the government's priority was sending aid to isolated areas.
