New Delhi: Following the first teaser drop in September this year, Mercedes-Benz have now given the first images of the prototype of the forthcoming G-Class Cabriolet. The Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet will be returning after a 12-year hiatus, following the discontinuation of the original model in international markets in 2013.
While little is known about the technical details are not known, it is expected to be quite identical to the G-Class, with the hard top giving way for the retractable soft-top.
Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet design language
Quite like the previous cabriolet version of the G-Class, this too will come with the soft-top roof folding. However, unlike the last version, which came with a short wheelbase and as a two-door model, the new G-Class Cabriolet will be coming as a four-door model. It also retains the side-hinged rear panel with the spare wheel mounted on it.
Apart from the redesigned roofline, the new G-Class Cabriolet comes with mostly the G-Class design language, including the flat bonnet, the slab-sided doors with protection bars and flared wheel arches. While the roofline is redesigned, it is still quite upright and still feels boxy, and that does mean the interior won’t be much different either.
There’s no update on the powertrain options, but it looks like there is a differential on the rear axle, which could mean that it will come with ICE. Mercedes might also offer the G-Class Cabriolet with an electric powertrain from the G580 with EQ technology. Apart from this, it will still be a serious off-roader with all the hardware still intact, but there’s no news on when it will debut.
Previous versions of the Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet
Mercedes had first offered the G-Class back in 1979, when it was a two-door short-wheelbase SUV that was made until 2013 for both military and civilian use. It has a roll bar and a manually retractable canvas roof.
In 2017, the German brand unveiled the ultra-luxurious Maybach G 650 Landaulet. It was based on the G 63 4/4 and came with a 6.0-litre V12 enigine that made 630 bhp. It was limited to 99 units and came with a hard top, along with a folding roof section and individual seats mounted at the back of the chassis.
