A revamped Rugby World Cup draw takes place today to decide the 2027 edition of the tournament, to be held in Sydney, Australia. In two years' time, as many as 24 teams will enter the competition, the highest number of teams since the World Cup's inception. As a result of such changes, the format will be changed.
Instead of four pools of five teams, in 2027 there will be six pools of four. The eventual winners will still have to play seven times to win the trophy, but now face the prospect of playing one fewer pool match. The top two in each of the six pools qualify for the knockouts, alongside the four best third-placed teams, as the likes of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland are all tuning in to discover their fates.
