Tamil Nadu has been battling heavy rain for the past few days triggered by cyclone Ditwah, prompting the authorities to shut schools and colleges in multiple districts. Cyclone Ditwah has thrown life out of gear in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring areas, and schools in several parts of the state, including Chennai, have been closed in the past days. As the remnants of cyclonic storm Ditwah moves northwards towards the Chennai coast and Andhra Pradesh, it is expected to bring more rainfall to the region.
Chennai and most of coastal Tamil Nadu are on an orange alert, according to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Chennai is likely to receive moderate rainfall on Wednesday too.

As of now, there is no official confirmation on whether the schools and colleges in Chennai will remain close on December 4, Thursday. But since Chennai has been battling incessant rainfall from the past few days, there are chances that the educational institutions might remain close on Thursday. Parents and students are advised to get in touch with the school authorities for the latest information.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also indicated that rainfall activity will continue from Wednesday until December 5 in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, accompanied by thunder and lightning in some areas.

It is pertinent to note that in view of the heavy rainfall warning caused by Cyclone Ditwah, Education Minister A. Namachivayam announced that all government, government-aided, and private schools in Puducherry will be closed on Wednesday. The statement said: "Due to heavy rain warning, all government and government-aided schools and private schools in Puducherry will be declared holiday tomorrow (03/12/25), Wednesday."
Chennai and its neighbouring districts -- Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram -- continued to experience steady rain from early morning, following two days of persistent downpour triggered by the system that developed over the Bay of Bengal. Several arterial roads, residential areas and low-lying neighbourhoods in and around Chennai reported waterlogging, affecting normal life and slowing down vehicular movement. The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms with lightning at several locations across Puducherry, Karaikal and other parts of Tamil Nadu.
Nilgiris, Erode and Coimbatore may receive heavy rain at one or two places, while districts such as Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Salem and Namakkal are also likely to receive heavy showers in isolated pockets.

Chennai school holiday December 4
Schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu were closed on December 3, Wednesday as continuous heavy rainfall, triggered by the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah, disrupted normal life across the region. Chennai Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade said all schools and colleges in the district will remain closed on Wednesday, December 3, due to continuous overnight rain and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
