It is very important for any batsman to play big innings to cement his place in Team India. It is every batsman's dream to score a century especially while playing for India. If we win on the basis of a century then our happiness will be enhanced. But it does not happen that every century will lead to victory and especially if these hundreds come from the bat of Rituraj Gaikwad, then defeat is certain. Something similar happened in the ODI match between India and South Africa, where Gaikwad played a brilliant inning but Team India lost and this is not the first time.

Gaikwad's first ODI century brought defeat

The second match of the ODI series between the two teams was played on 3 December in Raipur. In this match, Team India batted first and scored 358 runs. For India, Virat Kohli scored a century for the second consecutive match and scored 102 runs. But this match became most special and memorable because of the century of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored the first century of his ODI career, that too in just 77 balls. Gaikwad scored 105 runs in 83 balls, which included 12 fours and 2 sixes.

But while Gaikwad might have hoped to lead Team India to victory on the basis of this century, the result was different and South Africa won the match by one wicket. South Africa achieved the target of 359 runs, which is the joint highest run chase against India in India. In this way, Gaikwad's century did not bring victory. But this is not the first time that Gaikwad's century has brought defeat.

Team India suffered losses earlier also

This was Gaikwad's second century in international cricket and in both the matches, Team India lost, that too with record run chases. Earlier, on 28 November 2023, in the T20 match against Australia in Guwahati, Gaikwad had played a brilliant century of 123 runs, which was his first century in international cricket. But Australia also achieved the target of 223 runs on the basis of Glenn Maxwell's century. This is the biggest successful run chase in T20 against India.

Same story of Gaikwad's century in IPL also

This is the story of Gaikwad's centuries not only in Team India but also in IPL. In the history of 18 seasons of IPL, Chennai Super Kings have scored 10 centuries but the team has faced defeat only twice. Both these centuries have been scored by this star batsman. First of all, in IPL 2021, Rituraj had played an inning of 101 runs against Rajasthan Royals but Rajasthan had achieved the target of 190 runs. Then in IPL 2024, Gaikwad scored 108 runs against Lucknow Super Giants and still Lucknow achieved the target of 211 runs.
