Amidst the increasing use of digital mediums, the Central Government has issued an important warning to mobile phone users. The government has warned that strict action can be taken under the law for misuse of mobile, use of fake identity, activities to cyber fraud or involvement in any other suspicious activity. According to officials, in many cases the punishment can go straight to jail. Therefore, citizens have been appealed to use their phones and digital services with full responsibility, caution and within the legal limits.

Misuse of mobile numbers has increased across the country in the last few months. Many cyber gangs are issuing SIM cards based on the identity or documents of others and using them for fraud, phishing calls and financial fraud. The Telecom Department has said that if multiple SIM cards are found illegally in the name of a person, or their numbers are found involved in any cyber crime, then investigation action can also be taken against the concerned citizen. In such cases, there is a provision of strict punishment for giving wrong information, submitting fake documents or using someone else’s identity.

The government has also clarified that blindly clicking on a link received on a mobile phone, installing a dubious app or sharing the OTP with anyone not only increases the financial risk, but the person may also unknowingly become a part of cyber crime. Cyber security experts say that many times fraudsters take control of the mobile user’s phone through remote access tools and use it for crimes like illegal transactions, blackmailing or identity theft. Later, the investigating agencies first reach out to the person associated with the mobile number and device.

The Telecom Department has asked citizens to regularly check their mobile numbers and see if additional or suspicious SIM cards are active in their name. The government has also provided online portals and apps for this, where users can get all the SIM information to their name. Problems can be avoided if you report a suspicious number immediately.

Apart from this, officials have also advised to be cautious while using social media, messaging apps and browsing. Sharing any kind of indecent, inflammatory, violence or fake news is also a punishable offense under sections of the IT Act and IPC. In many cases, people sharing such messages have even been sentenced to jail. Therefore, it has been advised to avoid forwarding any message without checking it.

The government has clearly said that awareness is the first condition of security in the digital world. It is now becoming necessary to use mobile responsibly and not just as a means of convenience. A little carelessness can get a person entangled in legal complications and criminal cases.
