According to religious scriptures, many such measures have been suggested, by adopting which a person can live a simple and easy life. Among them, Tulsi worship and cow service are two such auspicious deeds, in the house where they are done daily, disease never knocks at the door and one gets many benefits.
According to ‘Skanda Purana’, Yamdoots do not enter the house where there is a Tulsi garden (and where Tulsi is worshiped daily).
It is mentioned in ‘Padma Purana’ that ‘by worshiping, chanting, meditating, planting and wearing Tulsi in Kaliyuga, it burns the sins and provides heaven and salvation.’
It is mentioned in the Uttar section of ‘Padma Purana’ that no matter what kind of sinner or criminal a person is, if he spreads a little dry basil wood on his dead body, on his stomach, on his mouth and starts a fire with basil wood, he will be protected from misfortune. Yamdoot cannot take him.
It is mentioned in ‘Garuda Purana’ (Dharma Kanda-Preta Kalpa: 38.99) that ‘by planting, nurturing, watering the Tulsi plant and by meditating, touching and singing its praises, the sins accumulated in the previous births of human beings are burnt and destroyed.’
‘One who drinks water with basil leaves at the time of death becomes free from all sins and goes to the world of Vishnu.’ (Brahmavaivarta Purana, Nature Section: 21.43)
‘One who wants to eradicate poverty and attain happiness and wealth should circumambulate the Tulsi plant 108 times with pure feelings and devotion.’
Planting a Tulsi plant in the north-east corner brings blessings.
