Margashirsha Purnima 2025: Significance

Purnima holds deep religious and spiritual importance in Hinduism. It is considered an extremely auspicious day when the moon is at its fullest strength and its divine rays are believed to bless the Earth. Every month has a Purnima with a distinct name, and this month’s full moon is known as Margashirsha Purnima or Agahan Purnima.

The Bhagavad Gita describes the month of Margashirsha as the most sacred of all months. The day is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu, and devotees observe a fast from sunrise to sunset. After offering prayers to the Moon God in the evening, they break their fast. One of the most popular rituals performed on this day is the Satyanarayan Puja.

According to the Puranas, nothing is more holy than the month of Margashirsha, which is referred to as “Maasonam Margashirshoham”—the most revered among months.

Holy Bath: Taking a dip in a sacred river or water body on Margashirsha Purnima is believed to bring spiritual merit and purification.

Worship of Lord Vishnu: Devotees worship Lord Vishnu in his various avatars, seeking protection, prosperity, and blessings. Many also observe the Satyanarayan Vrat and perform the Satyanarayan Puja.

Dattatreya Jayanti: Margashirsha Purnima is also celebrated as Dattatreya Jayanti, marking the birth anniversary of Lord Dattatreya.

Charity: Giving alms and participating in charitable activities is considered highly auspicious on this day. Helping the needy is believed to invite divine blessings and good karma.
