Phu Quoc Island welcomed nearly 7.6 million tourists including 1.6 million foreign arrivals in the first 11 months of this year, up 35% year-on-year and surpassing this year’s target.

In November alone, the island received 510,000 tourists, up 50% year-on-year, according to a report from An Giang Province’s Department of Tourism.

The number of foreign tourists increased threefold to about 242,000.

Phu Quoc, voted the most beautiful in Asia by readers of American magazine Condé Nast Traveler, had aimed to receive 7.25 million tourists this year, including 1.2 million from overseas.

Belgian visitor Philippe Tchekouteff, who was on the island last month, described Phu Quoc as “great and beautiful” and said the weather was favorable at that time.

“There are good restaurants and entertainment services are diverse,” he added.

Tchekouteff said he was fortunate to leave the island before a massive power outage affected parts of Phu Quoc late last week.

Since Nov. 29 some parts in the north have been without power after the 110 kV Ha Tien – Phu Quoc submarine cable was damaged when a contractor building a coastal road unknowingly drove piles into it.

On Dec. 1 the Southern Power Corporation said it would need at least one month to repair the submarine cable if there is favorable weather.

October to May is the peak travel season on the island with sunny weather and clear blue sea.
