New Delhi: The Modi government has officially renamed the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) as part of its ongoing efforts to reshape key institutions under the Central Vista redevelopment project. The new PMO complex is in its final stages of construction and has now been given a fresh identity, one that officials say reflects the government’s broader vision of governance. New PMO Complex Nearing Completion
Officials confirmed that the renaming is part of a coordinated effort to present India’s top administrative spaces as symbols of national purpose and modern governance. The Idea Behind the New Name According to officials, the new name has been chosen to embody the philosophy that governance should be rooted in service rather than authority. They explained that India’s public institutions are undergoing a “quiet but profound transformation,” and the new title reflects a shift from the traditional idea of power to one of accountability and duty.
The central theme, they noted, is to create a workplace where the spirit of service forms the foundation of every decision. The new naming convention, they said, signals a cultural and moral shift in how the Indian state sees its role — no longer as an emblem of authority, but as a space dedicated to national priorities and citizen-first governance. Under this approach, every building, symbol, and designation has been re-evaluated to highlight the government’s stated commitment to service. “Every name, every building now points to one simple idea: the government is for service,” an official said.
Earlier Institutional Renaming This shift is consistent with previous renaming decisions.
In 2016, the Prime Minister’s official residence was renamed Lok Kalyan Marg, a title meant to represent welfare rather than exclusivity.
More recently, the Central Secretariat — the administrative heart of the government — was named Kartavya Bhavan, underlining the concept of public duty.
Officials said these changes collectively highlight an ideological evolution: Indian democracy, they believe, is consciously choosing responsibility over authority and service over position. A Symbolic Transition The renaming of the PMO marks another step in this larger transformation. While the unveiling of the new name signals a shift in identity, officials emphasized that the deeper goal is to redefine how governance is perceived — as a tireless commitment to national service.
New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new office of the Delhi BJP on Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg in the national capital on Monday, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Saptami during the Navratri festival.
The upcoming complex was earlier referred to as the ‘Executive Enclave’. Once completed, it will house not only the Prime Minister’s Office, but also the Cabinet Secretariat, the National Security Council Secretariat, and the offices of ‘India House,’ which will serve as the venue for high-level talks with visiting foreign dignitaries.Officials confirmed that the renaming is part of a coordinated effort to present India’s top administrative spaces as symbols of national purpose and modern governance. The name change is not limited to the PMO. Raj Bhavans, the official residences of state governors, have also been renamed as ‘Lok Bhavans’.
