There has finally been relief news for the teachers in Punjab who have been facing salary problems for a long time. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has taken a big decision to pay the salaries of 93 teachers working in government colleges that were withheld for the last 36 months. This includes Baba Heera Singh Bhattal Institute of Engineering and Technology and many other educational institutions.
Teacher committed suicide due to non-payment of salary
This step assumes more serious importance at a time when a teacher, upset over non-payment of salary, had taken the drastic step of suicide. After this incident, the Chief Minister talked to all the affected teachers and the family of the deceased teacher in a special meeting. It was an emotional moment for two young children present in the meeting, who lost their father due to financial problems and mounting debts.
While consoling the family, the Chief Minister assured that the government will fully support them and such a situation will not be allowed to arise again. According to the information, during the previous government, the salaries of these 93 teachers were stuck for three years, due to which many families were plunged into financial crisis. Many teachers had to take loans to meet children’s fees, treatment and daily expenses. Due to constant uncertainty and mental pressure, stress and depression increased in him. Teachers organizations raised their voice repeatedly, but no concrete steps were taken.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann immediately intervened in this matter and said that teachers are the foundation of the society and neglecting them is a matter of shame for any government. He also clarified that the aim of the Aam Aadmi Party government is not just to make announcements but to root out the problem which has affected hundreds of families. The government has started the process of releasing the outstanding amount by giving orders to the Finance Department.
What did the education department officials say?
Education Department officials say that the amount withheld is in crores, which will be released in a phased manner. In the first phase, the amount will be given to the family of the teacher whose death had made the issue a topic of discussion across the state. After the decision, the teachers present in the meeting looked grateful. Many teachers said that after years they felt that the government was really paying attention to their problems. Teachers’ organizations have described this as an example of the sensitivity and administrative responsibility of the Punjab government.
Experts believe that this decision will strengthen the education system, because teachers are able to be more dedicated to their work when they get financial security. This initiative has not only provided relief to 93 teachers but also boosted confidence among the teacher community across the state. This step is being considered to give a new direction to the education sector in Punjab.
