Former England captain Joe Root has scored his 40th Test century of his career. He achieved this feat in the second Ashes Test against Australia. He now ranks fourth in Test cricket history for most centuries. This was his 59th century in total. Here's a look at the list of batsmen with the most centuries in international cricket, and where do Root, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma rank?

Most centuries in international cricket

Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most centuries in international cricket, and is the only batsman to have scored 100 centuries. Virat Kohli is second on the list, having recently scored his 84th international century in the second ODI against South Africa. Ricky Ponting (71) and Kumar Sangakkara (63) are also on the list.

Joe Root, who scored his 59th century in the second Ashes Test, has now moved up to sixth in the list of most centuries in international cricket. India's Rohit Sharma is ranked 10th on this list. Three Indians are among the top 10 cricketers with the most centuries.

Virat Kohli holds the record for most centuries in ODI cricket . He has scored 53 centuries so far, followed by Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 49 centuries in his ODI career. Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most centuries in Test cricket, with 51. Jacques Kallis is second on this list, with 45 centuries.
