Senior advocate and former Mizoram governor Swaraj Kaushal died at the age of 73 on Thursday after suffering chest pain.
Doctors at AIIMS declared him dead shortly after he was rushed to the hospital. Kaushal, husband of late BJP veteran and former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, was the father of New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj. His cremation will take place at the Lodhi Road crematorium.
Bansuri Swaraj posted a heartfelt tribute on X. She remembered her father’s warmth, discipline, and values. Moreover, she wrote that his departure brought immense pain but expressed faith that he had reunited with her mother in eternal peace. She described being his daughter as the greatest pride of her life and vowed to carry forward his legacy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over Kaushal’s death. He called Kaushal a distinguished lawyer who used his profession to uplift the underprivileged. Furthermore, Modi recalled that Kaushal became India’s youngest governor and left a lasting impression on the people of Mizoram. He also praised Kaushal’s contributions as a parliamentarian.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the news as heartbreaking. She highlighted Kaushal’s invaluable service to law and public life. Additionally, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan offered condolences. He prayed for peace for the departed soul and strength for Kaushal’s family.
Kaushal’s passing has drawn tributes from across the political spectrum. Consequently, leaders remembered his dedication to public service, his legal acumen, and his role in shaping governance.
